Engineered bamboo
Bamboo flooring and finish are ordinary finish materials. Structural bamboo beams need an evaluated product and an engineer, and must stay out of contact with wet hempcrete.
Code status in the United States
- ICC-ES ESR-4781 covers a laminated bamboo strand lumber made in China (grade 1.7E, Fb 3,200 psi as a beam). It can be used for beams, headers, joists and rafters, but under the IRC only with an engineered design, and only in dry interior conditions with in-service moisture below 16%.
- ICC-ES ESR-1636 covers borate-treated round bamboo poles from Quang Ngai, Vietnam, for trusses and members in Type V construction. These are poles, not engineered beams.
- ICC-ES is still developing structural-bamboo acceptance criteria with BASE Bahay.
- ISO 22156:2021 covers round-culm bamboo structures and excludes engineered bamboo. ISO 23478:2022 gives test methods for engineered bamboo; it is not a design code.
Without an evaluation report, structural bamboo needs approval through the building official's alternative-materials process (CRC R104.11) with test data.

Vietnamese goods also carry a 12.5% Section 301 duty since Jul 24, 2026 (exemptions apply), plus processing fees. China-origin bamboo carries additional China duties. Confirm with a licensed customs broker.
Bamboo, lime and moisture
- Wet hempcrete is mixed at a water-to-binder ratio of 1:1 to 2:1 and takes weeks to dry, while ESR-4781 limits bamboo to below 16% moisture. Keep bamboo out of contact with wet hempcrete.
- Bear bamboo beams on steel or timber with a gasket, not in hempcrete pockets, and lay bamboo floors only after the walls test at or below 25% moisture.
- Bamboo is highly susceptible to powderpost beetles and termites, especially when moist or starch-rich; borate treatment and dry conditions are recommended. Lime finishes slow fungal attack but do not stop insects.
